8th-Grader Advances to Regional Spelling Bee Competition

March 6, 2024

Update: Thomas placed third out of 22 participants in Saturday's regional meet. Congratulations, Thomas!

Thomas Sachenko, 8th grader, will compete in the regional spelling bee in Maumee on Saturday, March 9 at 10 a.m. Held at the Maumee Indoor Theater, Sachenko will compete with the winners from a 9-county area. The winner of the regional competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the national competition.

“I’m excited and nervous, but I’ll try my best,” said Sachenko.

This is the second student to compete in the regional competition in two years. Last year’s competitor was 8th-grader Kahle Houdeshell who finished third in regionals.

To qualify, students must first win a school-wide competition. The top two local winners advance to the Hancock County spelling bee. Then, the winners from a 9-county area take an online test in spelling and vocabulary. The top 25 of these competitors qualify for the regional competition.
